5 reviews for HP OMEN Max 16″ Gaming Laptop (Ryzen AI 9 HX 375, RTX 5080, Shadow Black)

**Best gaming laptop I’ve ever tested — one small note**

Having reviewed a lot of gaming laptops, this is the most capable one I’ve used. The combination of Ryzen AI 9 HX 375 and RTX 5080 makes it future-proof for at least three years of AAA gaming. The 240 Hz display is buttery at competitive titles. I’m giving four stars only because the included power brick is large — expected for a 280 W GPU TDP, but worth knowing before you pack your bag. Performance itself is five stars.

**Shadow Black finish looks premium even at a LAN**

The aluminum build quality on the OMEN Max 16 is genuinely premium — feels solid and heavy in all the right ways. The Shadow Black colorway looks professional enough to take to work but aggressive enough to stand out at a gaming event. Wi-Fi 7 on the road gives me close to wired speeds at compatible hotspots. 32 GB DDR5-5600 handles texture-heavy modded Skyrim without a stutter.

**Incredible performance, runs warm under sustained loads**

The Ryzen AI 9 with its 55-TOPS NPU accelerates AI-assisted workflows in DaVinci Resolve noticeably. Gaming performance is top-tier — I haven’t found a title that brings this machine to its knees. My only caveat is that under extended rendering sessions the chassis gets warm (not uncomfortable, just noticeable). The 2 TB storage was one of my deciding factors and it’s fast — sequential reads around 7 GB/s.

**Finally a laptop that doesn’t need a desktop backup**

I bought this specifically to replace my desktop rig for LAN events and it delivers. The RTX 5080 16 GB GDDR7 keeps framerates pinned north of 200 fps in competitive titles at 1080p, and at native WQXGA the visuals in single-player games are jaw-dropping. RGB lighting on the keyboard is fully customizable via OMEN Gaming Hub. The 2.5 Gb ethernet port is a sleeper feature that makes wired LAN gaming buttery.

  5. Jason R.

**RTX 5080 in a laptop is absolutely unreal**

Upgraded from a previous-gen OMEN and the RTX 5080 with GDDR7 is in a completely different league. Cyberpunk 2077 at 2560×1600 with path tracing enabled — smooth. The Ryzen AI 9 HX 375 handles streaming, Discord, and a browser running simultaneously without even blinking. The 240 Hz WQXGA panel looks gorgeous and the 2 TB SSD is a lifesaver for storing my entire game library.
